Abijah was the son of John Walker & Jane (Curtis) Alloway. Abijah married Malinda Arnspiger on November 24, 1846 in Jennings County, Indiana. Abijah and Malinda's children, Hester Ann and George, were born in Jennings County, and both died before the 1850 US Federal Census. Their children, Mary Bell, Sarah Ellen, John (AKA Jay), Abijah, and Emma Blanche were all born in Jasper County, Iowa, where the family had moved about 1851 and where they were recorded living in the 1860 US Federal Census. By the 1870 US Federal Census, the family lived in Oswego, Labette County, Kansas, where John was a farmer. John died in 1874, and Malinda died in 1878, leaving their eldest son, John (AKA Jay), at the age of 21, the head of the household for his siblings.
