Thomas Brown built and successfully ran the Occidental Hotel at Quesnelle (Quesnel) on Lot 3, Block 2, in 1865 with partner Hugh Gillis. After a slump in the economy (and it being rumored that Gillis had been ruined in the collapse of the Omineca Gold Rush), Gillis committed suicide in 1871 leaving Thomas Brown the sole owner of the Occidental. For a short time after the death of Gillis, Brown took on Alfred Carson as a partner but soon bought him out. Upon his death in 1878, Brown left the Occidental Hotel to his widow Sarah Ann who soon after married the hotel manager—a rough and ready gold minor named John McLean.
