"Mrs. George Van - The death occurred at an early hour on Tuesday morning of another of our Cariboo pioneers, in the person of Mrs. George Van, who had attained the ripe age of 87 years. The deceased lady had been ill several times of late, but had preserved her faculties almost to the last.
She was born in Granby, Quebec, in 1845, and was married there after attaining young womanhood to M. Xavier [sic] Duclos. A few years later she and her husband came to Cariboo, crossing the United States first, to San Francisco. They located at Richfield, and then for a time at Stanley, later coming to Quesnel where Mr. Duclos worked fir [sic] the late Jean Baker. Mr. Duclos died in 1905, and in 1913 the deceased married the late Mr. Van, who died in 1928, since which time she has lived here with her step-son, Mr. George Duclos.
The funeral took place on Thursday morning from Ste. Anne's R.C. Church, Mass being sung by Rev. Father McIntyre, after which the remains were interred in the local cemetery. The church was filled with friends and neighbours, who gathered to pay their last respects to one who had lived so long among them. The pallbearers were all old friends of the family, namely: Messrs. Marion, Lamb, Craig, Tremblay, McAdam and J. Sutton. The coffin was covered with floral offerings from friends and relatives.
Besides her step-son, the deceased is survived by three brothers, all living in Granby, P.Q.
The funeral arrangements were in the hands of the local cemetery. Rev. B. H. L. Dance officiated at the service."
