She was born near Garber, Iowa, in Clayton County on July 16, 1918, the daughter of Albert J. and Bertha L. "Babe" (Hansel) Hageman. Fern was raised in the area, and attended Elkport Public Schools.
Fern was united in marriage to Dale Furgeson on September 28, 1951. Together they lived in Hawkeye. She worked as a cook for the Clayton County Home and assisted her parents in the operation of their restaurant/bar Al's Tavern in Colesburg for many years.
