OBITUARY
Mary Jane McDowell was born Jan. 30, 1838 in Pike Co., Ohio, the daughter of James and Eliza McDowell, early pioneers. In 1861 she married David Porter of Douglas county, Illinois, but their wedded life lasted but one year, for Mr. Porter contracted a fever, which caused his death while serving in the Civil War.
Mrs. Porter was married again in 1864 to H. Jefferson Neal and their wedded life was one of much happiness, although there were many hardships during their first years, spent in making overland trips to Minnesota until they settled in the vicinity of Harmon, Kansas and then to Illinois where in 1896, and where she continued to reside until her death Sunday evening April 10, 1921. No children were born to the union, but Mrs. Neal, however, raised a niece and a grand niece, Mrs. Ella McDowell Parker and Mrs. Nellie Parker Nicholson; the niece, Mrs. Parker preceding her in death in 1899. She leaves to mourn her death one brother, Benton McDowell of Wadina, Minn., and a brother-in-law, James P. McWilliams of Dixon.
Mrs. Neal was a kind-hearted woman, always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in time of need. The 83 years of her life were fruitful of much good and she will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends.
