Rebecca Davis was born in Pennsylvania on Mar 29, 1790. Her father was William Davis, an emmigrant, b. 1764 in Ireland, d. Jun 11, 1811 in Pennsylvania. Nothing is known of her mother or siblings, at this time.
She married Ashton Layton from Kentucky and they had five children : Catherine, b.1815, William, b.1818, Davis, b.1822, John T., b.1823, and Branson, b.1825. It is known that Catherine, Davis and John went West on the Oregon Trail. Apparently Rebecca and Ashton had made their home in Knox County, Illinois in the 1830's. Ashton Layton died in Knox County, Illinois on Sept 27, 1839. The widow Rebecca (Davis) Layton met & later married her 2nd husband, Mr. John Gaffney in Aug 1843.

It can only be assumed that they lived in Effingham County, Illinois as Rebecca (Davis) Layton Gaffney died at that location in 1859. She has not been found under either the name Layton or Gaffney in any known cemetery in Illinois. There were no children born of her marriage to Mr.Gaffney that have been found. Wish I had more information to share & am still looking.>

"John Gaffney was buried in Lyons Cemetery, Fairview, Fulton, Illinois, Plot: Section 8 with his first wife, Priscilla Morgan. [Upon looking, I see he has been linked to Rebecca!].
We know that John Gaffney died in 1846 and Rebecca Davis Layton Gaffney, at age 61 [not using the name Gaffney] is found on the 1850 census in Knox Co., Illinois [22 Nov], age 61. She is living with her son, William and his family. Also, living near her on this census is:
Joshua Davis, age 49, b.OH PP 0/2000. Is he the son of Joshua Sr.?
His wife:
Martha age 48 b.VA;
James W. age 22 b.OH
Martha E. age 13 b.OH
The next page shows:
William Davis age 55 b.PA
Judith Davis age 47 b.RI
Martha M. Davis age 12 b.IL
On the last page [15] in the Twp. is a
Nancy Davis, a widow age 47, b.PA with children.
There are the surnames Davis and Clay in the family of Catherine Layton's husband, John Moore. I have been trying to find a connection."
