EDWARD BROOK PASSES AWAYS ON THURSDAY
Well Known Pioneer Was Active in Early Day Business Circles
Edward Brook, aged 91 years, one of the pioneer leaders of this community died at his home on Pine Street last thursday afternoon after an illness of two weeks. Funeral services were held from St. John's Episcopal church Sunday afternoon, Rev. Harley G. Smith officiating and his e\remains laid to rest in the Burlington cemetery.
Mr. Brook was born at Bradford, Yorkshire, England, February 14, 1837. At the age of twelve he came to America and grew to manhood on a farm in the town of Brighton, where on February 14, 1972 he was united in marriage with Hannah E. Ingledew. Upon receiving a considerable inheritance from relatives in England the family moved to Burlington in the early nineties and this has since been their home.
The late A. Meinhardt established the Meinhardt Bank in 1891. He died before the bank was a year old and because of his wide acquaintance and sound business judgement, Mr. Brook was invited into partnership with Miss Eda Meinhardt in the institution. This continued for five years during which time another bank was established at Antioch in charge of Albert Meinhardt. At the end of the five year period the partnership was dissolved, the Meinhardts taking the local institution and Mr. Brook the Antioch bank, which is still conducted by his son Ernest.
Mr. Brook was also involved with other projects. In partnership with his sister he established the Brook-Barlow Investment Co. and acquired most of the land in Perkins Park. He was for years president of the Burlington Brick & Tile Co.,when it was one of the leading industries in Burlington.
Mr. Brook is survived by his widow, Mrs. Hannah Brook, two sons, J. Ernest and E. Elmer, both of Antioch, Ill., and two daughters, Mrs. R. P. Spencer, of Eustice, Fla., and Mrs. Howard Newell, of this city.
