Alex B. 'Eck' Mitchell was one of seven children born to John M. Mitchell,Sr and Mary Harriett Wilson Mitchell. He moved with his parents, two brothers and one sister from Potosi, Washington County, Missouri to West Texas in 1899. His family was among the original families in Ward and Winkler Counties.

Eck was a house painter and interior decorator by trade. He was a veteran of both World War I and World War II. He fought in several big battles during his tour of duty in World War I.

He was married to Stella Marshall of Midland, Texas in 1918. No children were born to this marriage. He died at the Veteran's Hospital in Big Spring, Texas.
