While on patrol in Chu Lai, Binh Son District, the Marines were targeted by several rounds of hostile sniper fire resulting in LCpl Key being wounded in his left thigh. Evacuated, he subsequently died of cardiac arrest due to exsanguination from the gunshot wound.
