Lester the son of Harvey and Laura J. Key of Opa Locka FL enlisted in the US Marine Corps on January 27, 1964 in Jacksonville FL. He was assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV that landed in Chu Lai Vietnam on August 14, 1965 OPCON to the 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
While on patrol in Chu Lai, Binh Son District, the Marines were targeted by several rounds of hostile sniper fire resulting in LCpl Key being wounded in his left thigh. Evacuated, he subsequently died of cardiac arrest due to exsanguination from the gunshot wound.
