Joseph Martin served in the New Jersey Militia for about a year. He enlisted when he was about 15 years of age, He served in the Colonial Army. He was perhaps the most prominent politically of the family, serving on the first Board of Trustees of Middlebourne as well as the first sheriff of Tyler County. He was born in Somerset County, New Jersey. He was married to Martha Bryson, 17 January 1786, Claysville, Township, Washington Co., Pennsylvania, and had several children: John, William, Susannah. Abner, Ephraim, Sarah, Elizabeth, Jane and Joseph
