Josie was the tenth child of Joseph and Ida Varner Devane. Her mother died when she was two, but her father never remarried. Cousin Becky Myrick helped out with the family. When Josie married Joseph Alton (Alt)Eason, they lived with her father and later raised their own family in the same home. After her death, her grandson, Smitty Eason bought the house, but it burned in 1977.

Funeral services for Mrs. Josephine Devane Eason, 74, Rte 1 Ellaville, who died Monday in the Americus and Sumter County Hospital, were held Tuesday at 4 p.m. from Hopewell Methodist Church in Ellaville, with Rev,. C. Drake and Rev. J. C. Moore officiating. Burial followed in the Ellaville Cemetery.
Mrs. Eason was a native of Schley Co., and was the daughter of the late Joe Devane and Ida Varner Devane. She had lived in Ellaville all her life and was a member of the Hopewell Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Alton Eason of Ellaville; two sons Jaoseph and Eugene Eason, both of Ellaville, two daughters, Mrs. Harold Johnston, Riverdale, and Mrs. Leon Parker of Americus; one brother B. L. Devane of Ellaville, two sisters, Mrs. May Dillard , Ellaville and Mrs. Eva Robinson of Americus; 14 grandchildren and 4 great grand children.
