US Congressman, US Senator. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio and a product of the public school system, he ventured into the field of insurance and started his own company. He founded the "National Republican" magazine in 1934 and was its editor and publisher. He entered politics and was a member of the Ohio state senate for over ten years and then became a perennial candidate for election the the United States House of Representatives in 1930, 1932, 1934 and 1936. Undaunted, he finally won election to the Seventy-sixth in 1939 and then to four succeeding Congresses. Defeated in 1948, he was back in 1951 to win election to the Eighty-second and Eighty-third Congresses only to resign in 1954 to run for the vacated seat in the Senate caused by the death of Robert A. Taft. He was successful and served out the remainer of the term only to be defeated by then Governor Frank Lausche. His last political endeavor was an appointment as special assistant to the Secretary of the Interior which he held until a political bombshell ended his political life. He was accused of improprieties in dealings with the corrupt Teamsters Union headed by Jimmie Hoffa. He retreated to a self-imposed retirement. Alone in his residence, he died of a massive heart attack in Chargin Falls, Ohio. After a typical Protestant service at the Methodist Church, he was transported back to his home area for burial in Mayfield Heights.
