The Plainview News 26 June 1897

The community was startled
and pained to hear of the studden
and unexpected death of Mrs.
Mary Davis, of Elgin, which occurred
on Sunday about 1 o'clock,
and was caused by heart failure
She was busy about her household
duties, in her usual good
humor and had just completed
hulling- strawberries for dinner.
She was in the meantime conversing-
with her son, when suddenly
she bent forward and rested her
head on the table before her. Her
husband and son went to her side
to ascertain the trouble, but with
one gasp she expired. Death had
come with its cruel and relentless
touch and took away one beloved
by family, friends and the whole
community. She was always
thoughtful self denying- loving wife
and mother, always ready to
lend a helping- hand to any in
trouble.
Mrs. Mary Champine Davis was
born near Toronto, Canada, on
June 17,1835, making her 62 years
and three days of age at the time
of her death. In the year 1853
she came with her parents to
Wisconsin where she lived for
ten years, and in 1863 moved to
Minnesota. In 1866 she was married
to Richard Davis who together
with one daughter, Fanny,
and one son, Lewis, are left. Besides
these she leaves three brothers,
Charles Champine living- in
Martin county, and Clark and
John of this place.
Funeral services conducted by
Rev. Teachout, were held at the
M. E. church, Elgin, Tuesday.
Thus lived one, loved and respected
by all, whose place can
never be filled, either in the home
or in the community.
