Charles Ernest Setzer was born in Hamburg, Germany, with the given name Carl Christoph Ernst Setzer, on June 19, 1835, to Johannes Henrich Setzer and Amalia Nonchen. The family emigrated to the United States in 1836 when he was just one, landing in New Orleans. The family settled in Hermann, Gasconade, Missouri in 1839. Charles was one of 13 children, with only 6 surviving till adulthood. Charles met and married Eleanor McKean Brown, in Missouri, in 1862. They moved their family to Orcas Island, Washington, and were one of the first 3 white families to settle on Orcas Island, primarly settled by Native Americans. Charles lived the rest of his life in Washington State, raising 7 children, and eventually passing away in Bellingham, Washington, at the age of 75.

There is no current marker. Due to the diligent efforts of Charles' great-great grandson, we have found that Charles and his wife Eleanor are indeed buried there, and plans are underway to purchase a tombstone for them.
