Our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mume Watanuki, age 87 years, 1524 Evergreen Lane, Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away on February 12, 1979 in a local hospital.
She was born November 15, 1891, in Akutsu, Tanogun, Gumma Province, Japan, and was the fourth of six daughters born to Masuzo and Sadako Watanuki. They have all preceded her in death. She came to the United States in 1914 and was married to Walter Mitsugoro Watanuki on April 14, 1914, at San Francisco, California. He died May 2, 1948. She and our father first lived in Tooele, Utah, and then moved to Midvale, Utah in 1922. She later moved to Salt Lake City where she had resided since and in the past several years divided her residence between Salt Lake City and Ogden in her daughters' homes.
Survivors are four children: son, Isamu Watanuki, daughter, Mrs. Mas (Tomoko)Yano of Salt Lake City; son, Max M. Watanuki of San Mateo, Calif., and Mrs. John (Reiko) Imada, Ogden, Utah; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, also, numerous relatives in Japan. Her strength was in her gentleness and dignity and her lifelong devotion to us will be sorely missed for the rest of our days.
Viewing will be Friday, February 16, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Deseret Mortuary, 36 East 7th South, Salt Lake City. Private services will be held Saturday, February 17, at 10:00 a.m. Salt Lake Buddhist Temple, 211 West 1st South, Salt Lake City, Utah. Burial will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
