U.S. Congressman. Born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1845 and settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He graduated from the Spencerian Business College, in 1857, engaged in the wholesale liquor business and was Mayor of Mayville, (1886-88). In 1889, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-first, Fifty-second and Fifty-third Congresses, serving until 1895. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he returned to his previous business interests until his death at age 74 in Mayville, Wisconsin.
