Asheville Citizen Times Sun Jan 24, 1993 - Charter Member of Civil Service Commission Dies
Thomas Wier Brown, 90, of 27 Plateau Road, died Friday, Jan. 22, in an Asheville health care center. A native of the Fines Creek section of Haywood County, he was the son of the late George Andrew and Nancy Clementine Clark Brown. He attended the North Carolina public schools and was a graduate of Cullowhee College. He formerly taught in the Haywood County school system, and was also a former salesman for Farmers Federation where he played guitar for the Farmers Federation String Band. He was a retired salesman with the Metropolitan Life Insurance co.
Brown was a member of the first Civil Service Commission appointed by the City of Asheville in 1939, and was instrumental in obtaining the first retirement pension from the NC General Assembly for the Asheville Police Department.
He was a Communicate of St. Mary's Episcopal Church. He was married to Rachel Lloyd Brown,, who died Sept. 26, 1992.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Lloyd Brown Frank and Rachel Elizabeth Brown Battles, both of Asheville; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 am Monday at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. Father David L. Huneycutt will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Episcopal Churchyard at Fletcher.
A private family litany will be held at 5 pm Sunday at Groce Funeral Home.
