Waynesville - George Andrew Brown Jr., 80, of 205 East Marshall St., Waynesville, former chairman of the Haywood Co. Board of Commissioners, died Tuesday in Haywood Co Hospital after a long illness. A teacher and merchant for many years, he was the son of the late George A. Brown Sr. and Nannie Clark Brown. A member of First United Methodist Church, he was a graduate of Haywood Institute and Western Carolina University. After teaching he went into business and became manager of Farmers Federation in the early 1930s. He was owner of George Brown Supply Co. for 26 years, and worked for the State Department of Agriculture from 1952 to 1960. He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Jarrett Brown; one son, Dr. George Wallace Brown of Waynesville; one daughter, Betty Cabe of Waynesville; two brothers, Thomas Brown of Asheville and Clark Brown of Arden; two sisters, Jane Allen of Canton and Mollie Teague of Maggie Valley; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Services will be held at 3 pm Thursday in the Crawford Funeral Home Chapel here with the Rev. Kelly Jones officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 pm at the funeral home and at other times will be at the home. Memorials may be made to the Haywood County Rescue Squad.
