Avis Flint, 79
Avis Flint was born in Fargo, North Dakota, on April 26, 1925, the daughter of David and Selma (Carlson) Swanson. She graduated from Moorhead High School and attended North Dakota Agricultural College (NDSU) and later graduated from Concordia College with a teacher's degree. Avis worked her way through college by singing with the "Gal Friends" on WDAY radio. Avis taught school in Castleton, North Dakota, Kindred, North Dakota, and at Fargo High School prior to her marriage.
Avis met her future husband, Glenn Flint, while she was singing with the "Gal Friends" and he was employed as a musician with the WDAY Orchestra. The couple was married on August 20, 1950. The couple lived in Fargo until 1955 when they moved to Washington, D.C. where Glenn was employed by U.S. Senator Milton R. Young. The couple moved to Alexandria, Minnesota, in January 1958 when Mr. Flint accepted a position with Central Minnesota Television.
Avis also taught school in Alexandria School District #206 and was involved with several organizations in the area. She was active with the Euterpean Club, Belles Lettres, the AAAA theatrical productions and was a member of the PEO. She also was an active member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ Choir.
Avis died on May 13, 2004 at her home at the age of 79. She is survived by children: Richard and wife Susanne Flint of Denver, CO; John and wife Carleen Flint of Grand Forks, ND; Susan Flint and husband Michael Leirdahl of St. Paul; and Jeanne Flint and husband Dr. Paul Thompson of Brainerd; 11 grandchildren: Jesse Flint, Jenny Flint, Eric Flint, Karl Flint, Christian Smith, Miranda Smith, Matthew Thompson, Isabel Thompson, Alejandro Thompson, Ava Thompson and Livia Thompson; and her beloved sister, Charlotte Ludwig of Alexandria. Avis was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister Janet.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at 2 p.m. from the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Alexandria. Reverend Suzanne Cekalla was the officiant. Musicians were Kori Peterson, Bill Riggs, Vern Munson and Chuck Wencl. Interment followed at the Carlos Prairie Cemetery.
