Garvin "Tip" Mills, of Waukegan, Illinois, passed on to be with the Lord at Vista Medical Center East of Waukegan on the morning of March 31, 2011. Born February 25, 1933 in Oolitic, Indiana, he was the son of Tip & Effie (Swafford) Mills. After graduating from Oolitic High School in 1951 he joined the United States Navy and was a proud veteran who had served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Upon retirement from the Navy, Garvin worked at the VA Hospital of North Chicago. He is survived by his companion of 37 years, Martha Johnson; three daughters, Terri, Jerri and Jenni Mills of Japan; one sister, Karen J. Brown of Bedford, and several nieces and nephews in Lawrence County, Indiana. Also surviving are the children of his companion; three daughters, Roxanna Johns, Angela Sims and Wilene Nard; six sons, William, Van, Gary, Gregory, Gerome and Tyrone Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Frank, Willie and Jan Mills; two sisters, Janice L. Beedie and Helen M. Mills; and one daughter of his companion, Linda Sharp. A private viewing for family will be conducted at Bradshaw-Range Funeral Home in Waukegan with burial and military rites to take place on April 8, 2011at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elmwood, Illinois.
