Carrie Mattingly, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died Saturday, April 9, 2011, at her home. Her children were at her bedside. She was 92 years old. She was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Hardin County to Will and Texie Reed. She married James Mattingly at St. Ambrose Church in Cecilia on June 15, 1940. They bought and lived on a small farm in Sonora where she remained until her death. She worked for many years at the J Mar Ruby Factory in Elizabethtown. She loved gardening and preferred working in her flowers than to be in the house. She was well known for her beautiful yard which contained many different flowers and plants. She often was seen walking around her yard with a hoe in her hands just in case she "saw a weed or felt that a flower would be happier in another place. She was a skilled seamstress and made beautiful, handmade crafts and quilts. In addition, she taught herself the art of tatting and created many lovely tatted items. She and her husband often displayed their handmade items at shows, and in later years, they hosted an open house to display and sell their crafts. Her creations grace many homes in Kentucky and other states. She was preceded in death by her parent, her husband and two brothers, Lawrence and Russell Reed. She is survived by two sons, Jim (Julia) Mattingly of Elizabethtown and Bill (Suzanne) Mattingly of Louisville; one daughter, Sue Jackson of Houlton, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Shari Burrell of Clemons, N.C., Michael Mattingly of Mill Valley, Calif., Joe Mattingly of Elizabethtown, Bill and Bobb Mattingly of Louisville, Jeff Jackson of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Brad Jackson of Woodbury, Minn.; eight great-grandchildren, Jade, Devon and Andrew Burrell of Clemons, N.C., Stephen and Alex Mattingly of Elizabethtown, Christian Mattingly of Mill Valley, Calif., and Maxwell and Elena Jackson of St. Louis Park, Minn.; one sister, Edith Corder of Upton; one sister-in-law, Eleanor Reed of Sonora; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. The funeral is at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Ignatius Church in White Mills. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Dixon-Atwood & Trowbridge Funeral Home in Elizabethtown where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
