Mrs. Lillian Mann, wife of W.R. Mann and two children, Bessie, age 3 and Wm. Randall, age 5, lost their lives in a fire which totally destroyed the Mann home about eight miles southeast of Moorcroft at about one o'clock Tuesday morning.

Mr. and Mrs. Mann who with the baby slept downstairs were awakened by a roaring noise, which sounded like a team passing on the road nearby. They then discovered that the ceiling of the kitchen was on fire, and Mr. Mann started to try to extinguish it, while Mrs. Mann went upstairs after the three older children who slept there. She sent the oldest child down and from the position of the bodies after the fire, it was evident that she had started for the stairway with the other two children in her arms when she was overcome by the heat and smoke.

The fire gained headway rapidly, and Mr. Mann soon ceased trying to put out the fire and after taking the baby out of the burning building started to go upstairs after Mrs. Mann and the children but found the stairway blocked by the flames. He then tried to get in through a door opening outside onto a shed and through a window but the second story was then all in flames, and he could do nothing. In about twenty minutes from the time the fire was discovered the building and contents were totally destroyed. The origin of the fire is unknown. The loss on building and contents was partly covered by insurance. Mr. Mann and the oldest girl received painful but not serious burns.

The remains were brought into town Thursday and at 2:00 in the afternoon services were held at the Presbyterian church by Rev. C.B. Whitehouse. Interment was at the Moorcroft cemetery, all being laid to rest in one casket and one grave.

The death of Mrs. Mann and children under such tragic circumstances was a shock to the entire community, and the sorrowing husband and surviving children and other relatives have the sincere sympathy of all.

Lillian Jacques Blanchard was born in Austinburg, Ohio, March 13, 1883, and removed with her parents to Chadron, Nebraska in 1889. She graduated from the Chadron high school at the age of 17 years and later from Chadron Academy with highest honors. Three years later she graduated from Doane College, Crete, Nebraska. During her college course she became acquainted with W.R. Mann of Crete, Nebraska to whom she was married June 14, 1910. This union was blessed with four beautiful children.
