Mrs. O. R. Blanchard Passes on July 29th; Came Here in 1889

The community was shocked and saddened by the word of the death at noon Saturday of Mrs. Alice Blanchard, one of Chadron's well loved pioneers. Mrs. Blanchard, an early teacher in pioneer days, when such academic talent as she possessed was rare and extremely valuable.
Later she was an efficient and always accommodating and cheerful clerk at the F. H. Rhoades general store here and held a wide and admiring circle of friends. She was always an earnest worker for the betterment of conditions of her family, her church and for Chadron and the community. She recently returned from Michigan and Ohio, where she spent the winter with a sister and brother, also with her son, Randall and wife, in Wisconsin. She seemed in high spirits and perfect health for one of her age. July 22, she was honor guest as the oldest mother at a mothers' and daughters tea at the Congregational church. Saturday morning she was not feeling her best, but was not seriously concerned and her death came as a shock about noon Saturday, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sam Whiting, who was with her and with whom she was making her home. The community mourns with and extends to her loved ones sincere sympathy. Alice Perthina Knapp was born in Austinburg, Ohio, November 6, 1859, where she grew to womanhood and received an academic education. After that she taught school for several years.
