PFAFFTOWN – Mrs. Gertrude Elizabeth Long Simmons, 95, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Forsyth County November 7, 1915 to the late Alice Moser Long and Benson A. Long. Mrs. Simmons retired from P. H. Hanes with 30 years of service. She attended Woodland Baptist Church with her son as long as her health permitted. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Simmons was preceded in death by her husband, John Bynum Simmons; two children, Johnny Thomas Simmons and Doris Elizabeth Simmons; three brothers and two sisters. Surviving are her son, Billy Bynum Simmons of the home; three grandchildren, Darrell Simmons, Debbie Simmons Langston and Clay Simmons; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Simmons, Zack Stanley and Kristie Benfield; three great great-grandchildren, Alison Benfield, Philip Benfield and William Stanley; also, one brother, Milton Long. A Graveside Service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 5 at Forsyth Memorial Park with the Rev. Tim Gammons officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 4 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Woodland Baptist Church Building Fund, 1175 Bethania-Rural Hall Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106 or Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
