Susan was the second wife of James Lott Copeland, born 1785, in Chatham County, North Carolina, a son of Aaron Elijah Copeland and Mary Melton. Lott's first wife, Elender Rice had died in 1822,
Lott cultivated well over 500 acres of land. His home was not a mansion, but a large rambling home with many large rooms added over the years as the family continued to grow. He was one of the first to advocate the advisability of crop rotation, and planting more than cotton. He raised several horses and loved to wager on them. Andrew Jackson's Bank War and the Panic of 1837 ruined her husband. His assets were claimed because he had endorsed notes or friends that they could not pay when they were called. Lott and Susan left their plantation and moved to Troupoille, County Seat of Lowndes County, Georgia. The section they settled is in modern day Brooks County, Georgia
