Stephen was born on March 14, 1795. Stephen was a private in Captain Aaron Hart's company of the 13th Kentucky regiment during the War of 1812. He served from November 15, 1814 to May 15, 1815 and was in the Battle of New Orleans. He moved to Harrison County, Indiana in about 1816 and there wed Mrs. Margaret[Crecelius] Kindle-Clingan on May 5, 1818. From this union was born:
1) John Clingan on 2 Feb 1819
2) Catherine on 18 Mar 1821
3) William H on 24 Mar 1823
4) Matilda on 27 Nov 1824
5) Sophia on 14 Nov 1826
6) Lenora on 15 Feb 1827
7) Hiram C on 3 Nov 1829
8) Julia Ann on 22 Oct 1831
9) Nancy Jane on 25 Nov 1833
10) George Kindle on 11 Jun 1836
11) James August on 1 Dec 1838
