Thomas Sellman was killed by Jack Foster in what was determined to be self defense under suspicious circumstances, as there were no reliable witnesses and the truth was hard to determine. The argument was over a gate that was being taken down, allowing stock to roam freely from Thomas's pasture. He fenced the gate in as a last resort and this was to be his fatal mistake. An argument ensued as he caught Jack Foster red handed, taking the fence down and confronted him. Jack stabbed him, resulting in his demise.

He married Emily Rachel (Chamberlin) Sellman on February 18, 1879.
