A twin to sister Achsah Dorsey, Basil was born to Caleb & Elinor (Warfield) Dorsey of Hockley-in-the-Hole Plantation, Elk Ridge, Anne Arundel Co MD. This area is now in Howard Co MD. He and sister Achsah were baptized on 25 Jul 1705 at St Anne's Parish in Anne Arundel Co MD.

Basil married Sarah Worthington, the daughter of Major Thomas Howard & Elizabeth (Ridgely) Worthington of Anne Arundel Co MD.

Children with Sarah:
1) Colonel Thomas Dorsey (1725-1790); m. Elizabeth Ridgely (1737-aft 1762).
2) Dennis Dorsey.
3) Elinor Dorsey; m. Upton Sheredine.
4) Ariana Dorsey; m. Thomas Sollers.
5) Sarah Worthington Dorsey (1735-bef 1769); m. Captain John Burgess Jr (1724-aft 1793).

Basil died, and most likely was buried at "Troy", a plantation where he resided, having inherited it from his paternal grandfather, the Honorable John Horace Dorsey.

Marriages & Deaths from the Maryland Gazette,
1727-1839, pg 50:
"Dorsey, Capt. Basil, died Sat. last [Aug 20], at his plantation at Elk Ridge, after a long and tedious indisposition. His funeral is to be attended this day. [Aug 25, 1763]."

Excerpt from "Will of the Honorable John Horace Dorsey":
"To grandson Bazill and hrs., son of son Caleb [Sr], plantation "Troy," in Balto. Co.; he dying without issue, to pass to grandsons Jno. and Caleb Dorsey, sons of son Caleb afsd."

Note: It appears Elk Ridge is now considered a part of Howard Co MD. Howard is a county located in the central part of MD, between Baltimore and Washington DC. It is considered part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area.

Excerpt from "A Pictorial History of Howard County" by J. Cramm:
"Troy Plantation was a Dorsey land grant patented in the late 1600's. Colonel Thomas Dorsey [Basil's older brother] lived in a frame dwelling on this patent until his death in 1790. His widow sold the 652 acres in 1808 to Vincent Bailey for $6,520. Bailey appears to have built this large stone house in the 1820's. In the mid-1800's, it was called "Troy Hill Farm." Troy can be seen sitting high on a hill as you approach from the east on Route 100 towards the intersection of Route 95.

"...stone house has been gutted by fire and only the shell remains. The County is still negotiating access to the site and is encountering difficulties with a surrounding property, which is being used as an illegal junk and dumping ground. Funds were included in this year's Capital Budget, and the National Park Service hopes to begin an archeological excavation in the Fall 2004.

"...original frame house that stood on the site from late 1600's to circa 1810, is where Basil Dorsey died on 20 Aug 1763."
