Notes found while researching Patterson family line: It's not clear how Hiram McDonald, son of John and Mary Tish McDonald, met and married Elmira Ellen Patterson. The most likely explanationis that Elmira's father, Levinus Welles Patterson, brought his family back to Washington County to visit family. His father, Thomas Patterson had died in Rock Bluff in 1869, but it is possible that his mother returned to Pennsylvania after the death of her husband. She lived until 1908.
A generation before, such lengthy travel would have been unthinkable, but the years following the Civil War brought remarkable growth in rail infrastructure, and train travel became easy and affordable.
