Andrew McDonald was born on April 20, 1840, on his parents' farm in Nottingham Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, the son of John and Mary Fish McDonald.

When Andrew was 14 years old, his father died, and heavy responsibilities fell upon him at an early age. He took charge of the farm and always lived there.

In 1862, he enlisted as a Private in the Civil War. He became a member of Company E in the Ringgold Calvary. On January 1, 1864, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. He served faithfully until the end of the war. An interesting diary covering 1 year of his service was found in the Friday, August 17, 1900, issue of the Washington Reporter.

On May 17, 1866, Andrew married Isabella P. Whitfield of Carroll Township. Together they had 8 children: Fannie, Laura, John, George, Edward, Andrew, Joseph, and Hattie Eldora.

Andrew was a member of the Presbyterian Church. For 40 years and 2 months, he filled every township office except that of Constable.

Andrew McDonald died on August 25, 1917, and is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Munntown.
