Elsie M. Thurman, 88, of Barstow, Calif., formerly of Galesburg, died at 7:38 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Barstow Community Hospital in Barstow. Born May 3, 1913, in Knox County to Grant and Mable Davis Ferris, she married Floyd E. Thurman on March 19, 1931, in Abingdon. He died in July 1989. She also was preceded in death by one grandson, one brother and four sisters. Surviving are one daughter Beverly (Arnold) Gordon of Barstow; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She and her husband farmed north of Yates City. She also owned and operated a business in Yates City. A graveside service was held at Haynes Cemetery near Delong with a memorial service on Saturday at Knoxville United Methodist Church in Knoxville with the Rev. Mary Vick Roth officiating. Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
