Earl E. Burgess dies at age 103

BENNINGTON - Earl E. Burgess Sr., 103, died June 4, 2004, at Washington Elms in Bennington.
He was born May 7, 1901, in Bennington, the son of George and Nellie (Grover) Burgess.
He married Helen Briggs on May 20, 1922, in Bennington. She died in 1991.
Mr. Burgess worked at Burgess Brothers Inc. in Bennington for many years.
He was an avid horseman who owned, trained and drove his own horses at various venues throughout the New England area for many years, including fairs, the Saratoga Harness Track and Hinsdale Raceway. He was an inductee to the Horseman's Hall of Fame, a member of the U.S. Trotting Association and a lifetime member of Bennington Elks Lodge 567.
He enjoyed playing cards.
Survivors include two daughters, Hazel Harrison of Bennington and Elizabeth Kearns of Walpole, N.H.; three sons, Chester Burgess of Bennington, George Burgess of Mount Holly and Edward Burgess of Belmont; 27 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Reynolds; a son, Earl Burgess Jr.; four brothers, Harold Burgess, Guy Burgess, Clyde Burgess Sr., and Frank Burgess; and five sisters, Jessie Mary Fenn, Ruth Shea, Irene Thurber, Gladys Burgess and Jennie Knapp.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
The Rev. Norma Drosky, pastor of First Baptist Church in Bennington, will officiate.
Burial will follow in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the service Monday at the funeral home.
