George L. Burgess 1934-2012 MOUNT HOLLY George L. Burgess, 77, formerly of Bennington, died February 4, 2012, following a long illness. He was born April 1934 in Bennington, the son of Earl Eugene and Helen Louise (Briggs) Burgess. He went to trade school in New York City and was in the National Guard for six years. Mr. Burgess worked at Union Carbine/Ever Ready before retiring to Lake Ninevah. He was a woodsman and enjoyed traveling, hunting and fishing. He was known as a craftsman who built two airplanes, an amphibian and a taildragger, two homes and woodcrafted pieces. Survivors include two sons, G. Paul and Richard, both of Mount Holly; two daughters, Beth Burgess of Montgomery and Lori Grikstas of Bennington; four grandchildren; two stepchildren, Michael Warren of Shaftsbury and Nancy Durgan of Mount Holly, and their mother, Viola Burgess; siblings, Betty Kearns of Keene, N.H., Chester Burgess, Hazel Candib, both of Bennington, and Ed Burgess of Belmont; numerous nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by siblings, Ty Burgess and Barbara Reynolds; and his former wife, Shirley Miller, whom he married in 1954. Services are pending.
