She earned a B.A. degree from Cornell College in Iowa. She was a beauty queen and belonged to the Tri Delta sorority. She studied religion and education at Boston University in Massachusetts. She received an Honorary Degree from DePauw University in Indiana.
On July 14, 1920 she married Richard Campbell Raines. They had four children: Rose L. (Allen), Robert A., Richard C. and John C.
After the Raines retired in 1968, they moved to Lakeland, Florida. They spent their summers in Glen Arbor, MI.
