Jefferson Baccus
Sex: M
Birth: 31 JUL 1872 in Eddyville, Trigg, Kentucky
Death: 31 MAY 1951 in Metropolis, Massac, Illinois
Burial: 6 JUN 1951 Lower Salem Church Cemetery, Massac County, Illinois
Occupation: Farmer and Navigational Light Keeper

Note:
Jeff Baccus was born near an iron furnace near Eddyville Prison, KY and later moved to Grand Rivers farm that was later traded to father, Seymore, for the farm known as Baccus Landing in So. Illinois on the Ohio River for $1.00 in 1912. He and his wife, Stella, floated down the Cumberland River to Ohio River and then to farm. They floated by flatboat for approx. three days with nothing to eat but cornbread and molasses. Stella blamed mother-in-law, Nancy Jane, for this. Stella never got along with her at all. It was said the Jeff's mother had flaming red hair, which could probably explain the friction.

Grand Rivers, KY was a thriving iron industry until about 1900. Jeff was a farmer and also Navigational Light Keeper for the light that was the beginning of the Grand Chain of Rocks before electricity came in.
Jeff was struck by a train on his way home from Stella's funeral, and died. [The Bacus Family History and Origin by Margie Baccus Hall]

Grandson, Leland Johnson 1/28/04:

"...Seymore's son, Jeff (my grandfather) died in 1951; his wife Stella (Easter) Baccus also died 1951; they are buried at Lower Salem Church, Massac, IL (church burned years ago but cemetery still maintained). Jeff and Stella had 5 children. Oldest was Seymore (Jr.) who drowned in the Ohio River about 1916 at age 14. Next was Jacob Pythias Baccus who died 1974. Third was Ruby Baccus, who married Dallas Jack Tanner and died at Santa Barbara, CA in 1997. Fourth was Eva, who married Charles Denton and died in 1966 at Metropolis, IL. Fifth was my mother, Neva Doris, and you have her obit."

Note: The order of birth set out above conflicts with dates of birth given by Margie Baccus Hall and leaves out one child, David, who died at 18 months of age.
