Mrs. Basnight was born in Hatteras and was a retired secretary for the Dare County Board of Education. She was a member of the Hatteras United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #49 Lakewood, NJ.
She was the daughter of the late Charlie H. Ballance and Lina Styron Ballance and was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Holmes Basnight.
Surviving are two daughters: Melva B. Garrison and Karen B. Martin, both of Manteo, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Sept. 27 in Twiford's Colony Chapel by the Rev. Robert Bundy, with burial in Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens.
