John worked at the elevator in Glenwood as a young man. He spent a few years in Connersville at the National Metals. John was a mechanic for the most of his life working at the Sinclair Station in Rushville for a few years and retiring from Farley Truck and Implements in Rushville after 38 years.
John loved working in his garden and on his tractors. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his grandkids.
In addition to his wife of 65 years Mary Schlechtweg of Rushville, he is survived by a son Mike Schlechtweg (Donna Vaughn) of Laurel a daughter in law Debbie Schlechtweg of Rushville a brother Bill (wife Margaret) Schlechtweg of Arkansas, 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Charles, a son Chuck and a daughter Mary Ann Tillison.
Services will be held at Moster Mortuary, Rushville with Rev
Jeremy Gries presiding. Friends are welcome to visit at the mortuary Wednesday evening from 4-8 PM. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery. The Rush County Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors.
Memorial contributions may be made to Miller's Merry Manor.

John was in the hospital in New York while in service. At the same time as his cousin John Oliver Pettay. John Oliver Pettay was a Lt. Col. When John Pettyfound out that John was in the hospital with him, he had John transferred to his room. John Oliver Pettay 1916-1953 is buried in Texas.
