Mildred was the daughter of Edmund Burrus and Frances Jones. She married Richard Head Paxton on October 17, 1833, in Anderson County, Kentucky. She and Richard were the parents of eleven children: James Edward, Philip Thomas, Ann Elizabeth, John William, Mary Frances, Gabriel Burrus, Ellen Jane "Jennie", Richard S., Mildred Catherine, stillborn daughter, and Elie Clinton. All of the ten surviving children lived long and prosperous lives.

Mildred is buried in the family cemetery that is located on the land once owned by her father, and later owned by her and her husband.
