Richard was the son of James Paxton and Nancy Bigger Head of Pennsylvania. He married Mildred Burrus on October 16, 1833, in Anderson County, Kentucky. They were the parents of eleven children.

The cemetery they are buried in was originally the property of Mildred's father, Edmund Burrus. Upon his death, he willed the land and the cemetery to his son-in-law, Richard, and daughter, Mildred.
