At the age of seventeen he left his home and moved to Shoreham, Vermont where he lived with his uncle, Job L. Howe. He spent four years there working at the trade of wheelwright. In the summer of 1812, he spent in visiting Troy, Albany and West Point, New York and New Jersey before returning to Shoreham. In April of 1814 he moved to Middlebury.
