Elam's grandson, Walter Breuning, is the son of Cora Mae Morehouse & John Breuning. Walter Breuning was the oldest man in the world from July 2009 until his death on April 14, 2011.

When interviewed by national and worldwide media, Walter told of his early life in Melrose, Minn and he recalled the Civil War stories his grandfather, Elam Morehouse, told him & his siblings. Walter felt many of the details in his grandfather's Civil War stories were much too detailed & scary for young children to hear.
