Kathleen Stanford Grant

Dancer. Choreographer. First generation pilates student and instructor.
Kathleen was apart of Harlem, the greatest entertainment capital in the 1940's. She was a popular chorus girl/dancer/choreographer at the legendary Zanzibar Club. She was featured in a photo spread in Life magazine for her beauty and talent. She was a featured danced in the legendary soundies films; the first music videos. She danced in the hit Broadway productions "Harlem Cavalcade" and "Finian's Rainbow." She also danced off Broadway, on television, industrials, with touring companies, and the concert stage, not only in the United States, but also in Europe, South America, Africa, and the Middle East. She performed with legendary dancers Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson, Cab Calloway, Pearl Bailey, Carmen DeLavallade, Honi Coles, Mary Hinkson, Mary Anthony, Walter Richardson, Donald McKayle, Paul Taylor, Geoffrey Holder, and others. She was an assistant choregrapher to Arthur Mitchell, Donald McKayle, Walter Nicks, and Michael Smuin. She served as a co-director and partner of the Claude Marchant Dance Comapny. She also was a dance instructor at the Dance Theater of Harlem. She also served as a dance panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, the Delacorte Theater and Dance Black America. She also contributed as choreographer for Francis Ford Coppola film "The Cotton Club."

Another credit to Kathy's name was she was a student and protege of Joseph Pilates. She is one of the only two individuals actually certified by Joseph Pilates. Kathy became a Pilates teacher in 1957. Later at the request of Mr. Pilates, she took over the Pilates Studio, where she taught for many years. In 1988, Kathy moved her current studio to New York University, Tisch School of the Arts. Until the end, she taught pilates workshops all over the world. Whether as a dancer or dance/pilates instructor, Kathy was a sight to behold on stage and off. She put fire, energy, and life into everything she did. Her knowledgeable, thorough, hands-on, never give up approach inspired generations of pilates and dance students. Kathy loved to share her knowledge with anyone who would take the time to open up, listen, hear and grow. The many women and men who have had the privilege of learning from a true master of not only the Pilates method but the moving body; have moved on to become brilliant Pilates and movement teachers in their own right. The countless individuals throughout the world that Kathy has touched with her teaching, mentoring and wisdom will remember fondly the lady who just would not stop.
