Clifford V. Smith, 65, prominent Muncie business man, died at his residence, 500 N. Calvert Ave., at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. He had been in ill health for some time, but his condition became serious Sunday.

The son of Ephraim and Malinda McKinley Smith, he was born in Delaware County and spent his entire life in this community. He was educated in Delaware County schools.
Mr. Smith owned and operated University Cleaners for 28 years prior to his retirement in 1955. He served on the City Council for nine years, and as a member of the Board of Trustees of Indiana State Reformatory for 11 years. He was a member of College Avenue Methodist Church, Muncie Lodge of masons, Moose Lodge, K of P, and TPA.

Surviving besides the wife, Lois, are a daughter, Mrs. Phillip Schooley, Muncie; two sons, Clifford A. Smith, Lafayette, and William H. Smith, Muncie; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Lydia Keeley, Muncie, and Mrs. Nellie May, Indianapolis; and a brother, Charles E. Smith, R.R.5, Muncie.

Services will be held at College Avenue Methodist Church at 1:30 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Donald Barnes and the Rev. Ralph Graham officiating. Friends may call at the Meeks Mortuary after 7 p.m. Wednesday, after 4 p.m. Thursday, or at the church an hour before the services.

Honorary pallbearers will include Herbert Wallace, Leonard Shick, Burl Madill, Fred Covalt, Morton Lambert, Howard Hoffer, Albert Martin, Frank Lang, Karl Beshara, William Howell, Ervin Smith, Harry Bowman, Harrison Derrick, Arnold Allen, Dr. William J. Quick, Gregory Ransberg of Indianapolis, and Howard Miller, Attica.

Active pallbearers will be Paul E. Norris, C.Cree Gable, Ethan Boldrey, Harry Merz, Charles Hatcher, Ralph Erley, Kenneth Brown Jr., Paul Leffler, and Dr. John Cullison.
