Colorado miner. Marshal of Idaho Springs, Colorado, in 1883.

Isaac Painter, IV, son of Nancy (née Springer) and Isaac Painter, III, was born possibly in January 1848 on his family's farm in Bruce Township, LaSalle County, Illinois. He was enumerated there in 1850 and 1860. By 1870, he had moved Colorado, where he worked as a miner, and became known as "Ike" Painter.

His elder brother Uriah S. Painter mustered out of military service at the beginning of 1865, and spent the next 8 years in the Rocky Mountains. A Denver, Colorado, newspaper reported on 30 April 1870 the arrival of Uriah and Isaac Painter; the two were going to Georgetown, Clear Creek County, Colorado.

Isaac Painter, IV, was enumerated in 1880 and 1885 in Clear Creek County, working as a miner. He was briefly the marshal of Idaho Springs, Clear Creek County, in 1883, but resigned to go on a trip to mines near Perote, Mexico. (He traveled there through New York, and returned months later through New Orleans.) By 1891, he was in Boulder, Colorado.

His fortunes seem to have diminished by 1900, when he was enumerated in Boulder County, Colorado, working as a day laborer. In the 1880, 1885, and 1900 enumerations, he was shown to be single, and appears to have subtracted 2 years from his age. Inexplicably, he also reported himself to have been born in Louisiana.

As for the confusion between the older and younger Ike Painters in the 1902 death notice, "Which Ike Painter?" (cited below), the younger Ike—nephew Isaac Thompson Painter (Uriah's son)—died in 1961.

Notes

"Isaac Painter [...] married Nancy Springer [...] died about 1870, leaving six children: [...] Isaac, married T. L. Freer [...]" (Elmer Baldwin, History of LaSalle County, Illinois (Chicago: Rand, McNally & Co., 1877), p. 346.)
This account seems to have invented a wife for son Isaac, and omits the seventh and youngest child, Elizabeth.
