Irene Mary Olchefske, widow of WWII veteran Raymond George and mother of seven, was born on December 3rd, 1917 in Marshall, Minnesota where she grew up with six brothers and sisters. Irene died on March 20th, 2011 in St. Paul, Minnesota in the loving company of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her prayers, that on that fateful hour all her loved ones would be present, were fully answered. She thought of her family above all else on earth. So, it was of no surprise that her expression in that last moment was not only of happiness over going to be with the Lord but also of sorrow, over leaving those she loved. She now remains with us in spirit and her loving protection surrounds us.
Irene was an active member of St. William's church in Fridley, Minnesota. She served on the Pastoral Board, was a Sacristan, Eucharistic Minister and Bible group leader. She also was Chairperson of the Befrienders, worked on the Respite Care project, and volunteered at the Phillips Eye Institute. Irene did not allow her small town upbringing to get in the way of serving God in a big town suburb.
One of Irene's heroes was Mother Teresa whom she admired for her sacrificial giving to the poor. Irene always championed the less fortunate, particularly innocent children, through her generous charities.
Irene loved to travel, read and write poetry; below is one of her poems written in 1995. She was best known for her wonderful sense of humor and dynamic personality.
Every day, we feel confident, there is at least one person outside her family who smiles in memory of her. She truly was a special gift to all who knew her.
Poem:
As dawn begins another day,
Please, Lord, guide me in your way.
To live each day with integrity,
I give you Lord my best to be.
Is tonight the night you call me home
So here on earth I no longer roam?
Will there be time to say ‘good bye'?
Please, dear ones, no need to cry.
I've been with you so many years,
I've loved you all, so no more tears.
I beg, my dear ones, do not be sad,
but think of me with Him and your heart be glad.
To smile and be cheerful is my gift to others,
for Jesus said, "we are all sisters and brothers."
Without you, Lord, I am but a shell
but with you, Lord, the world I tell
that You are my hope and strength, my eternal well.
So He in me and me in Him forevermore,
how could I ask for anything more?
So thank you, Lord, my God, my friend,
You are my Most High… all to You I bend.
As I enter into slumber deep
into Your arms, my soul You'll keep.
