Mahala Emert died at the age of 73 years, 10 months and 0 days. Her birthdate was figured from these facts.

Mahala (Lyon) Emert was the daughter of Asher Lyon (1792-1863) who was born in New Jersey or Tennessee and died in Scott County, Virginia; and Ann (Taylor) Lyon (1792-1879) who was born in Tennessee and died in Scott County, Virginia.

Mahala had the following known siblings:

Harrison Lyon 1817 – 1890
LeRoy Lyon 1820 – 1902
Elizabeth Jane Lyon 1822 – 1880
Ruth Lyon 1825 – 1866
Sarah Lyon 1829 – 1882

The Lyon family lived in Tennessee until the mid-1800s. Between 1822 and 1825, they moved to Virginia where Mahala and her younger siblings were born.

Mahala married Richard C. Emert probably around 1840. Some say they had at least 13 children. This writer has names of only nine:

Elizabeth Anna (Emert) Marsh 1842 – 1912
James Madison Emert 1846 – 1919
William Harrison Emert 1848 – 1922
Mary C. Emert 1849 –
*Dr. Susan M. "Sue" (Emert) Ellis 1855 – 1926
Sarah Margaret Emert 1858 –
Elbert S. Emert 1861 –
Ellen Emert 1864 –
Ida Bell Emert 1866 –

The Emert family lived in Virginia until at least 1855. Within the next three years after that, they moved to Hancock County, Illinois. Richard Emert contracted some kind of fever and died in 1877. Between 1880 and 1883, Mahala and her children moved to rural Kirksville, Adair County, Missouri. Some of Mahala's children married and continued to live near her in the area of La Plata, Missouri.

Mahala died in 1898 and is buried in La Plata Cemetery. At least 3 of her children are also buried there.
