LEONARD GRIZZLE
1928 - 2011

Leonard Martin Grizzle, 82, was called home to be with his Savior on Friday, March 18, 2011.

He was born November 2, 1928, to the late Samuel E. Grizzle and Lelia O'Brien Grizzle of White Oak, Flatwoods.

Mr. Grizzle was famed as the "Front Porch Philosopher" by the Daily Independent newspaper, writing frequently about local issues and his musings on nature. He was an author, having published his autobiography, Growing Up In the Hills of Kentucky and Memories, a book of poetry. Another book Eli and Ezra, was in the works, but was never finished. Leonard loved sitting on the front porch of the Clyffside neighborhood home, feeding the wild birds by hand on hot summer afternoons. He was a wooden toymaker, enjoyed gardening, tinkering on old cars, and doing home repairs. He also loved listening to old-time Bluegrass music.Leonard was a WWII veteran, proudly serving in the U.S. Army as an MP in Germany. He was a 50-year member of United Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local 248 and was a Kentucky colonel.

Mr. Grizzle was predeceased by his step-mother, Ruth Grizzle, brothers, Lawrence and Samuel Grizzle of White Oak and sisters, Marguerette Mullins, Nina "Beatrice" May of Flatwoods and Sylvia York of Anaheim.

He will be missed by his loving wife of more than 60 years, Beatrice Hickman Grizzle, his children, Dale (Suzanne) Grizzle of Gainesboro, Tenn., Debra (Russell) Holland of Norfolk, Va., and Daryl Grizzle of Ashland, and his sisters, Minnie Chandler of Flatwoods and Frances Grizzle of Anaheim, Calif., also surviving are his grandchildren, Heather Holland (James) Coulter of Norfolk, Valerie Holland (Rahim) Akbar of Elizabeth City, NC., and Aaron Grizzle and Laura Grizzle of Ashland, step-granddaughter, Julie Price and great-granddaughter, Hannah Renee Coulter.

The service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at Carman Funeral Home, 2301 Argillite Road, Flatwoods. The service will be led by the Rev. Russell Holland. Burial will follow in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East.
