Kenneth married Agnes Wold of Crosby; they moved to Seattle in 1940. Kenneth was supervisor of heavy construction throughout the U.S. until his retirement. Agnes retired from Seattle First National Bank.

In 1969, Kenneth made the newspapers.

"A Navy helicopter plucked Mark Greenwald, 8, Seattle, from the shore of Hat Island near here late Saturday after his grandfather beached a 16-foot outboard in high winds."

"Kenneth Haavig, 59, Seattle, took his grandson on a fishing trip. Strong winds forced him to beach his boat. A patrolling helicopter crew spotted them and took the boy to safety. Haavig elected to remain with his boat to keep floating debris from damaging it. A Coast Guard cutter picked him up at 5 a.m. Sunday.

"It was miserable cold," Haavig said, "but I was too busy keeping logs away to worry about anything else."
