"Our Life is What We Make It"

Our mature happiness depends upon the manner in which we conduct ourselves. We can make our life useful, gay, and happy. Or we can make it a burden to ourselves and a curse to the community in which we dwell. We can make for ourselves a name that will never die. A name that can be stamped indelibly upon the pages of history and that will be held in high esteem and will be cherished for generations to come. Let us strive to make for ourselves a good name for "a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold."

And now while in youth is the time to prepare for the duties of life. We can take an upward course and rise to eminence, or we can take a downward course and be despised. Therefore, let us take our march upwardly and go on from one degree of good work unto another, until we shall at last have finished our course, and be able to enter the home of the blessed.

- J.O. Blanton

*Quote is from Proverbs 22:1, the King James Bible

Died while at school in North Carolina. Was studying to become a minister at Ashpole Institute in Leesville, Robeson County, NC.

Note: NOT the same person as Joseph Oliver Blanton (1882 - 1954).

(Perhaps his namesake?)
