The February 6, 1939 edition of The Robesonian included the following: Spurgeon McLean Claimed by Death – Funeral Today at 3 P.M. at McDonald for Prominent Postmaster There – The funeral of Spurgeon McLean, 81, who died Sunday at 5 p.m. at his home at McDonald, will be conducted from the home today at 3 p.m. and interment will be made at Mt. Moriah Baptist church cemetery. Mr. McLean had only been confined to bed since Friday. His death was due to dropsy and diabetes and the infirmities of age. He was a farmer and merchant and had been postmaster at McDonald for 25 or 30 years prior to a month or so ago. His wife died 8 or 10 years ago. Surviving are four daughters and three sons-Mrs. P. H. Adams of Rowland, Mrs. D. M. Crews of Oxford, Mrs. G. Wroth Covington of Greensboro, Miss Bessie McLean of the home place, H. S. McLean and Dr. Graham McLean of Lumberton and Charles A. McLean of Otten: one sister, Mrs. J. W. McLean of Lumberton: one brother, Ernest McLean of the McDonald section of the county…All members of the family were present at the funeral except one son, Charles A. McLean, who is a patient at Oteen.
